According to local Ugandan journalist Emmanuel Katto, Uganda is one of the poorest countries in the world and has one of the quickest rates of poverty reduction in Sub-Saharan Africa. According to a 2016 review of poverty, there was a significant drop in poverty in Uganda between 2006 and 2013. In 2013, 19.7 percent of Ugandans, down from 31.1 percent in 2006, lived below the poverty line.
