SFP-10/25G-LR-S — real world thoughts before I order?

submitted 1 month ago by robertandrson to shopping

I’m planning to pick up some SFP-10/25G-LR-S modules for links that need to run longer distances over single mode fiber, and since our environment has both 10G and 25G gear, these dual-rate optics look like a convenient fit. Before I commit to buying them, I want to get a sense of how well they actually behave in the field.

A few things I’m wondering:

Has anyone used SFP-10/25G-LR-S regularly and seen smooth negotiation between 10G and 25G? I’d love to know if certain switches handle the negotiation better than others, or if it’s generally consistent across platforms. Since these will go over single mode, do you find that fiber cleanliness or patch panel quality makes a big difference at 25G compared to 10G? I want to avoid a situation where something only shows instability after it’s live. Any surprises with heat, power draw, or optics behavior when these have been deployed long term?

Ideally I’d like these to be a reliable, long term solution rather than just a stopgap while we standardize on one speed. If you’ve bought and deployed SFP-10/25G-LR-S, what would you double check before ordering? And how has your experience been after they’ve been in service for a bit? Thanks in advance — really appreciate hearing what’s worked or what to avoid.
