The majority of a cell's genetic material is found in its nuclei, which are composed of numerous long linear DNA molecules arranged in complex with a wide range of proteins, including histones, to form chromosomes. The genes contained in these chromosomes are known as the nuclear genome of the cell and are structured to promote the functions of the cell; in other words, the nucleus is the control center of the cell because it regulates gene expression and upholds the integrity of genes.
